Combining Lettering Styles

Letter Style Combinations

There is no charge to use a combination of two lettering styles on a Budget, Classic, Deluxe, or Photo announcement. This may be done by using one style for the text and a second style for the student name or the name of the group holding the graduation. When combination lettering is used, the line set in "different" type is always enlarged. This is an attractive way to emphasize the student's name if no name card is being used.  However, there are a few guidelines that you should follow for best results:

  1. The line being set in the different type should be at the center of the text or in the top half so that the layout will look balanced. We don't recommend using combination type if the student name is near the bottom of the text.

  2. Lettering combinations work best if there is ample room on the page.  If your announcement has already used every available line, using a different lettering style with it may cause it to look crowded or jumbled.

  3. We suggest using the combinations shown on this page because they work.  If you want to choose your own combination, it is a good idea to use this guideline: Choose one lettering style that is a "BLOCK" style (the letters are separate and the font does not slant very much) and one lettering style that is a "SCRIPT." (Script styles usually have a lot of slant and the letters are often connected.) If selecting from the "Designer" fonts, be sure that there is a good contrast between the two styles.

  4. The most important thing in choosing lettering combinations is that the two styles be very different -- there should be obvious contrast between them. A combination of styles that are too similar simply confuses the eye of the reader.

  5.

How to order a letter combination:
The announcement order form has a box to enter your lettering style choice. If you enter two styles, the first will be used for the body of the text and the second  for the student name.  For example, the first sample shown below would be entered as "AVA, ENG."
